What's The Story?
Betita believes she is a crane, as her father has told her stories linking their family's heritage to the Aztecs, who originated from Aztlán—the land of the cranes. After fleeing cartel violence in Mexico, Betita's family seeks refuge in Los Angeles. Their hopes for safety are shattered when her father is arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and deported. Betita and her pregnant mother are subsequently detained in a family detention center. Amidst the harsh and inhumane conditions, Betita turns to poetry to cope, finding solace and strength in her writing and the community she builds with fellow detainees.
